But where did B9 come from? What did it mean? Why wasnt it always just "Tribeca", why bother with the B9 part? Ive always thought it was weird. I think I was the only one that I knew of that actually said "B9 Tribeca" no one said the B9 part. Im genuinely curious, not trying to be mean to your car.

The B9 was the first installment of the Tribeca, people didn't like it very much (I did) so they decided to make some changes, bigger and more powerful engine, boring looks. Subaru considered the changes to have affected the car so much that it needed a new name, thus bringing the Tribeca into life. B9 was the project's name I think.

I liked it too, No one that I knew back when it was new agreed with me. B9 being the project name kinda makes sense, still no reason to add it on to the name. Its superfluous

The "B9" was taken from the concept's name, B9X. As for where that came from...

Subaru has a weird affinity for acronyms. One place I can think of where the "B9" originated from could be from the Japanese 3rd generation Legacy. These were sold over there as the B4 Legacy, and are still sold that way. That supposedly has a meaning: Boxer Four. However, following that convention, the B9 Tribeca would have a 9 cylinder boxer engine. That doesn't make sense.

Another possibility is that the initial letter is based on the chassis of the car (which can be determined by the 4th character of the VIN). This is supported by both the B4 Legacy and G4 Impreza (also JDM). The B4 Legacy is a "B" chassis vehicle, while the G4 Impreza is a "G" chassis vehicle. The Tribeca is based on the "B" chassis, but is modified significantly enough that it has its own chassis designation, "W". That still doesn't explain the "9".

Then we get to the Alcyone SVX S3, Alcyone SVX S4, and Impreza WRX S4. If you have gotten this far, I'm sure you would agree that Subaru's two character model acronyms have little rhyme or reason. That's probably why Subaru dropped the "B9" after 2 years, for the 2008 model year refresh.

Subaru's 3 character acronyms actually make a bit of sense, but I'll leave that for another day.
